ABOUT MEI am a visual artist born and based in Antofagasta, Chile.
My painting practice has emerged from a long-standing engagement with the landscapes of northern Chile, particularly the Atacama Desert and its human and industrial context.
For more than a decade, I worked in the mining industry, traveling through and living within one of the most extreme landscapes on Earth. That experience profoundly transformed the way I see the world and became the foundation of my artistic practice.
My work explores the relationship between nature, territory, and community. I am interested in investigating how the geological forces of the desert coexist with the human stories rooted there—stories of connection, care, permanence, and memory.
Through abstraction, I create surfaces that evoke the history embedded in the earth and the traces left by our presence upon it. My paintings emerge from the meeting point between the land's mineral memory and the human experience.
PROCESS
My work unfolds through layers that are built and transformed over the course of several days, allowing each stage to enter into dialogue with the one before it.
I work primarily with acrylic and high-density materials, creating textured surfaces that evoke the geology of the landscape—its strata, veins, and accumulations, each suggesting the history embedded within the earth.
I intervene in the painting while it is both wet and dry, allowing the material to flow, expand, or resist. Rather than imposing a predetermined image, I follow the transformations that naturally emerge throughout the process.
The painting becomes a space where matter holds memory and where the passage of time remains visible in every surface.
